Federal Student Aid

What is federal student aid?  It's money from the federal government - specifically, the U.S. Department of Education - that helps you pay for college, career school, or graduate school expenses.  Federal student aid is available through grants, work-study, and loans every year.

AttachmentJCI Senate Foundation Scholarship

Scholarships will be awarded to graduating high school seniors in South Dakota, who plan to continue their education at accredited post-secondary colleges, universities or vocational schools. They must be used for educational expenses in the first year of full-time study.

Applications for the South Dakota JCI Senate Foundation Scholarship will be judged and ranked as 1st place recipient ($250.00 award); 2nd place recipient ($200.00 award); 3rd place recipient ($150.00 reward). 


Winning recipient applications are eligible for the US JCI Senate Scholarship award of $1000.00.  Applications will be forwarded by the SD JCI Senate Scholarship Program Manager.

Dakota Corp Scholarship
Qualified Applicants Must:
  • Graduate from an accredited South Dakota high school with a Grade Point Average (GPA of) 2.8 or greater on a 4.0 scale.  Home schooled students will be allowed to provide supplemental information if this requirement is not applicable.
  • Have a composite ACT score of 27 or greater (or the SAT equivalent).
  • Agree, in writing, to stay in South Dakota and work in a critical need occupation after graduation for as many years as the scholarship was received, plus one year.   The current critical need occupations for 2017-18 are:
    • Teacher - High School Math
    • Teacher - High School Science
    • Teacher - Elementary or Secondary Special Education
    • Teacher - High School Career and Technical Education
    • Teacher - K-12 Foreign Language
    • Accountant / Auditor
    • Engineer (includes all fields EXCEPT mining)
    • Information Technology
    • Registered Nurse

Deadline: Applications must be postmarked by February 1 to receive consideration. All applicants will be notified of the decisions.

Build Dakota Scholarship

The Build Dakota Scholarship was created to be a catalyst to help solve this problem. By providing full scholarships and creating industry partnerships, Build Dakota can get more skilled scholars into the state’s workforce. Build Dakota Scholars receive a free education, businesses gain employees, and South Dakota grows. We all win!

South Dakota Opportunity Scholarship

​The South Dakota Opportunity Scholarship provides up to $6,500 over four years to a qualifying student who attends an eligible higher education institution in South Dakota.  Recipients may participate in the South Dakota Opportunity Scholarship program for the equivalent of four academic years (eight consecutive fall and spring terms), or until attaining a baccalaureate degree.  Eligibility requirements and application can be found here
