The South Dakota Opportunity Scholarship provides up to $6,500 over four years to a qualifying student who attends an eligible higher education institution in South Dakota. Recipients may participate in the South Dakota Opportunity Scholarship program for the equivalent of four academic years (eight consecutive fall and spring terms), or until attaining a baccalaureate degree. What is federal student aid? It's money from the federal government - specifically, the U.S. Department of Education - that helps you pay for college, career school, or graduate school expenses. Federal student aid is available through grants, work-study, and loans every year.

The Lee Johannsen Estate established a scholarship for Jones County students. The goal of the scholarship is to encourage local students to continue their education at a college, university or technical school. Mr. Johannsen was a long time resident of Jones County living most of his life on a ranch northwest of Okaton and was a faithful member of the St. Peter Lutheran Church. He passed away February 12, 2000.
The Johannsen scholarship for current college students is a $4,000, $2,000 fall semester & $2,000 spring semester award. This scholarship is available to a Jones County High School graduate who will be enrolled as a full-time student in a college or university as a junior or senior during the 2021-2022 school year. Scholarship selection will consist of application evaluation.

Over the course of several years, SDTA has awarded nearly $80,000 in scholarships. In 2021 we will award 4 students with $1,500 scholarships. Students need to reside in one of our company service areas. Golden West Telecommunications & Kennebec Telephone Company are included in the service area.
