South Dakota Opportunity Scholarship

​The South Dakota Opportunity Scholarship provides up to $6,500 over four years to a qualifying student who attends an eligible higher education institution in South Dakota.  Recipients may participate in the South Dakota Opportunity Scholarship program for the equivalent of four academic years (eight consecutive fall and spring terms), or until attaining a baccalaureate degree.  Eligibility requirements and application can be found here

Inez Taylor Walter Scholarship

The Inez Taylor Walter Scholarship Fund was established by Harley Taylor in memory of his sister, Inez Walter who was from the Ipswich area. The scholarship is for high school students in South Dakota. Preference in awarding this scholarship will be given to a student planning on attending a South Dakota or North Dakota college or university in the field of nursing.

SD Engineering Society - Central Chapter Scholarship

Central Chapter Scholarship


The Central Chapter awards one $900 Engineering Scholarship to a graduating senior in the Central Chapter area. Applicants must be attending either South Dakota State University or South Dakota School of Mines & Technology for the Fall Semester 2019 and majoring in engineering. A completed application, including the essay and other required documents, must be submitted by April 1, 2019, to be eligible for consideration.

AttachmentDonald H. Quimby Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship provides a one-time $350 award to a worthy South Dakota high school graduate attending a post-secondary institution.

Donald Quimby spent his professional life in service to others as a teacher, coach, and administrator. He believed that everyone should have the same opportunity at a higher education, regardless of GPA.

Applicants for this scholarship award must meet the following minimum criteria:

  •  Graduate from a South Dakota high school;
  •  Submit a 300 to 500-word essay detailing your personal story, interests and educational goals;
  •  Please attach your essay and a copy of your high school transcript to this application before submitting it;
  •  Provide a copy of the acceptance letter to the post-secondary institution.
(Please note: Preference may be given to a student from Hecla, Frederick, Gettysburg, Plankinton and Parkston high schools.)​

Lee Johannsen College Scholarship for Jones County HS graduates

The Lee Johannsen Estate established a scholarship for Jones County students.  The goal of the scholarship is to encourage local students to continue their education at a college, university or technical school.

The Johannsen scholarship for current college students is a $4,000, $2,000 fall semester & $2,000 spring semester award.   This scholarship is available to a Jones County High School graduate who will be enrolled as a full-time student in a college or university as a junior or senior during the 2020-2021 school year.  Scholarship selection will consist of application evaluation.

  • A copy of a current college transcript, showing completed courses, cumulative credits and cumulative GPA should accompany the application.

Build Dakota Scholarship

The Build Dakota Scholarships is awarded to skilled scholars entering high-need workforce programs at South Dakota technical institutes.

  • Both in-state students and out-of-state students are eligible for the scholarships.
  • Enroll full-time in a technical institute program determined as a high-need workforce area in South Dakota.
  • The scholarships will support tuition, fees, books and other required program expenses in the eligible technical institute programs.
  • Recipients of the scholarships will commit to living and working in the state, in their field of study, for three years following graduation

Pierre Street Masters Scholarship

Street Masters Car Club is offering a $500.00 Scholarship to a qualified and accepted High School graduate
intending to enroll in coursework in the automotive trades.

Applicant must be a senior at a South Dakota High School.
Applicant must have maintained a 2.5 GPA or better over his/her high school career.

Applicant must be enrolling in an institution of higher learning with the intention
of preparing for a career in a field related to the automobile industry.

James H. Jenssen Scholarship

To be eligible for a James H. Jenssen Scholarship, you must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Be a resident of the state of South Dakota and a high school senior OR Be a resident of the state of South Dakota enrolled in an engineering program at South Dakota School of Mines or South Dakota State Univeristy for the upcoming academic year
  • Be a United States Citizen
  • Have a parent, grandparent, sibling, uncle, aunt or cousin employed a minimum of 3 years (or retired) with the South Dakota Department of Transportation.
  • Have a current High School GPA of 3.0 (based on a 4.0 grading system) or higher OR a minimum of a 3.0 GPA at School of Mines or SDSU if currently attending the univeristy.
  • Demonstrate the ability to become an asset to the engineering field.  The student's personal aims and goals should be consistent with this requirement.
  • For legal reasons, applicant must not be a realative of James H. Jenssen.

Scholarship value:  $500 (four scholarships awarded in the fall)

Applications must be postmarked no later than July 15
